The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has emphasized the need for innovative financing solutions to drive sustainable growth in Africa’s maritime industry.
Dr. Dayo Mobereola, NIMASA’s Director General, made this call at the 7th Association of African Maritime Administrations (AAMA) Conference in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. In his keynote speech, Mobereola highlighted Nigeria’s dedication to enhancing maritime safety, security, and environmental sustainability through regional collaboration and technological advancement.
“Nigeria is steadfast in fostering innovation and leveraging technology to create a safer and more sustainable maritime future,” Mobereola stated.
He noted that the AAMA conference provides an essential platform to tackle shared challenges such as sustainable energy, regional security, and economic growth. Mobereola urged African nations and global partners to adopt innovative financing models to address the sector’s pressing infrastructure and digital transformation needs.
“As we prioritize infrastructure development and digital transformation in Nigeria’s maritime sector, we call on our partners for both technical and financial support,” he said.
Mobereola also stressed the importance of collective efforts to combat maritime crimes, including piracy in West African waters. He pointed to frameworks like the Djibouti and Yaoundé Codes of Conduct as pivotal in addressing these issues and solidifying Nigeria’s leadership in regional maritime security.
The AAMA conference, a key event for African maritime leaders, aims to foster cooperation and unified approaches to critical industry challenges. Nigeria has played a central role in these efforts, having hosted the 3rd AAMA conference in 2017, where an action plan for advancing the African Maritime Transport Charter was developed.
“The AAMA continues to serve as a driving force for harmonizing policies essential to the growth of Africa’s maritime industry,” Mobereola remarked. “This collective momentum is vital as we navigate the complexities of the global maritime landscape.”
With Nigeria championing innovative strategies and regional collaboration, the future of Africa’s maritime sector appears poised for transformative growth.
