Former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has disclosed how he pleaded with the late General Sani Abacha to spare the life of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who was implicated in an alleged coup plot in 1995.
Speaking during the inaugural Interdenominational Unity Christmas Carol and Praise Festival organized by the Plateau State Government, Gowon recounted his efforts to intervene in Obasanjo’s case.
He revealed that he wrote a letter to Abacha, urging him to act with compassion and not resort to execution.
Gowon even sent his wife to deliver the letter to Abacha in Abuja in the middle of the night.
Obasanjo was arrested in 1995 under accusations of planning to overthrow Abacha’s regime.
He spent three years in prison and was released in 1998 following Abacha’s death.
“I’m thankful that my plea contributed to a change in events. Not only was Obasanjo freed, but he also went on to become Nigeria’s president in 1999,” Gowon stated.
Reflecting on the power of prayer and unity, Gowon expressed joy at celebrating alongside Obasanjo and emphasized the importance of fostering national unity.
