The Tony Okocha-led faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has gone ahead with its state congress, defying a court order that prohibited such gatherings.
A Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt had issued an interim injunction barring the APC national leadership, including Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, from conducting congresses for the state chapter.
The order came after a lawsuit filed by Okwu Joebrown-Ndike, Peace Oganu, and Samuel Uchegbule, who claimed they were excluded from participating despite purchasing nomination forms.
The injunction specifically halted congresses scheduled for November 23 and 30, 2024, or any other date, pending the resolution of the substantive case.
However, the Okocha-led faction proceeded with the congresses at its factional secretariat along the Port Harcourt-Aba Expressway.
The Congress Planning Committee Chairman dissolved the Okocha-led Caretaker Committee (CTC) to pave the way for new leadership elections.
Key party figures, including South-South National Vice Chairman Chief Victor Giadom, Magnus Abe, and Chidi Wihioka, were present at the event.
The APC in Rivers State remains embroiled in legal disputes. The Chief Emeka Beke-led executive, loyal to former Governor Rotimi Amaechi, continues to challenge the Okocha faction, which aligns with former Governor and current FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
The Beke-led executive’s tenure is expected to conclude in 2025, while the internal conflict intensifies.
