Boko Haram militants launched an attack on a Nigerian Army base in Kareto, Borno State, on Saturday, killing an undisclosed number of soldiers.
The insurgents engaged in a fierce firefight with the troops before overrunning the camp, setting ablaze 14 vehicles and seizing military equipment, including heavy machine guns.
The Borno State government confirmed the attack, with Governor Babagana Zulum expressing condolences to the military and the families of the fallen soldiers.
He condemned the assault, calling it a stark reminder of the terrorists’ brutality.
The attack also poses a threat to efforts aimed at resettling internally displaced persons (IDPs) in northern Borno, as Kareto is a key area for this initiative.
Governor Zulum reiterated the commitment of the state’s government and people to support the military in its fight against insurgency and offered prayers for the souls of the deceased.
