The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, is buzzing with anticipation as preparations ramp up for the highly anticipated 2024 Abuja Carnival International Polo Festival, set to kick off on December 4 at the iconic Guards Polo Resort in Asokoro.

Known for its competitive edge, excitement, and grandeur, this polo tournament is one of the major highlights of the annual Abuja City Carnival, which stands as the FCT’s biggest sporting and tourism event.

Officials from the Guards Polo Resort have confirmed that preparations are already in full swing for the prestigious event, which is the second-largest polo competition on their calendar after the Unity Polo Tournament. All stakeholders are working diligently to deliver another unforgettable experience during the city’s carnival.

Already, there is an upscale of activities at the resort with the turf, the clubhouse, the stables, and the general surroundings receiving attention just as the players and the horses are getting ready with practice sessions ahead of the week-long fiesta.

But unlike previous editions of the glamorous event, only Abuja-based horses may be vying for honors no thanks to the ravaging African Horse Sickness (AHS) that has forced postponements of polo tournaments in neighboring Kaduna.

Top officials explained that the move to bar visiting horses from the event this year was to support the ongoing efforts to contain the spread of the viral sickness to other parts of the country and ensure the general safety of horses.
