The movement towards visa-free travel across Africa is gaining momentum, with Rwanda and Kenya recently opening their borders to all African citizens. This shift is aimed at boosting unity, economic growth, and cultural exchange within the continent. While visa-free travel isn’t widespread across Africa yet, a few countries are embracing this progressive change.
Here are five African countries currently offering visa-free entry to travelers from other African nations:
1. Seychelles
Seychelles has been a pioneer in promoting hassle-free travel, having allowed all African nationals to enter without a visa since 2018. Although other countries, including Nigeria, no longer offer visa-free entry, Seychelles remains a strong advocate for visa policies that stimulate tourism and economic growth.
2. Gambia
In 2019, Gambia took a major step by granting visa-free entry for travelers from Commonwealth countries, EU states, African nations, and even Belgian nationals holding valid ID cards. This move reflects Gambia’s commitment to inclusivity and easy travel across borders.
3. Benin
Benin made headlines in 2019 when President Patrice Talon announced the removal of visa requirements for all visitors. This change has strengthened ties across West Africa and made the country more accessible, inspired by Rwanda’s open-border policies.
4. Kenya
In October 2023, Kenyan President William Ruto announced that visa requirements for African tourists would be lifted. This policy aims to establish Kenya as a key destination for both trade and tourism, fostering stronger economic and cultural connections.
5. Rwanda
Rwanda joined the list of countries offering visa-free travel in November 2023. President Paul Kagame emphasized Rwanda’s role as an East African business and tourism hub, underlining the country’s commitment to being a welcoming travel destination for Africans.
While 48 African nations now allow at least one other African country’s citizens to enter without a visa, these five countries stand out for their steadfast efforts to open their borders and create a more connected and prosperous Africa.
