In a significant victory against terrorism, the Nigerian government has convicted over 325 terrorists, some of whom have received up to 70 years in prison.
This was the outcome of the Phase 5 and Phase 6 trials held at the Kainji Detention Facility. In the Phase 5 trial, 143 cases were tried, with 125 convictions, while Phase 6 saw 237 cases, with 200 convictions.
Sentences ranged from life imprisonment to the death penalty, depending on the severity of the crimes, such as attacks on civilians, abductions, and the destruction of religious sites.
Those found guilty of financing terrorism were also given life sentences.
The trials, conducted by five federal judges, followed international justice standards to ensure the safety of all involved.
This effort is a step towards restoring peace and stability in affected regions of Nigeria.
