On December 10, 2024, Kechi Okwuchi, one of the two survivors of the tragic Sosoliso Airlines Flight 1145 crash, commemorated the 19th anniversary of the incident. The crash, which occurred on December 10, 2005, claimed 107 lives, including 59 of her classmates from Loyola Jesuit College.
In a heartfelt message shared on her social media platforms, Kechi expressed her enduring connection to her departed classmates, referring to them as “60 Angels.” She wrote, “Dear 60 Angels, 19 years have passed since the Sosoliso plane crash that took your lives among other dear souls while sparing mine and one other. Another year, another new set of milestones. All for you. Please keep watching over me as I make even more memories for you.”
Kechi’s journey since the accident has been one of remarkable resilience and achievement. She suffered third-degree burns over 65% of her body and underwent more than a hundred reconstructive surgeries. Despite these challenges, she graduated with a First Class Degree from the University of Saint Thomas in Houston, Texas, and gained international recognition as a finalist on the twelfth season of America’s Got Talent in 2017.
Each year, Kechi honors the memory of her classmates, dedicating her milestones to them and seeking their guidance as she navigates life. Her story continues to inspire many, exemplifying strength and perseverance in the face of unimaginable adversity.
