On December 3, 2024, President Bola Tinubu emphasized the need for Nigeria and South Africa to deepen their collaboration for the betterment of the African continent.

Speaking at the 11th session of the Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission (BNC) in Cape Town, Tinubu highlighted that the true success of the partnership lies in the implementation of agreements, not just signing memorandums of understanding (MoUs).

Tinubu stressed that the relationship between the two nations is a shared responsibility to foster Africa’s progress. He urged both countries to focus on youth development, as the youthful populations in Nigeria and South Africa can drive economic growth for the continent.

The BNC, formed in 1999, has been instrumental in strengthening ties between Nigeria and South Africa, with 36 MoUs signed so far. Tinubu warned against viewing the MoUs as mere formalities, urging practical action to ensure the agreements result in real benefits.

The President also proposed the creation of an anti-illegal mining group, calling for joint efforts to tackle illegal mining, which undermines Africa’s natural resources and development. He further requested South Africa’s support for Nigeria’s bid to join the G20 and BRICS, seeking to elevate Nigeria’s role in global economic governance.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa echoed Tinubu’s sentiments, acknowledging Nigeria’s growing influence in his country’s economy. He also called for the removal of barriers to investment and highlighted efforts to improve the business environment, including easier visa processes for Nigerian citizens.

Both leaders are committed to expanding bilateral cooperation, particularly in youth empowerment, investment, and economic development. The partnership aims to address the challenges and opportunities facing the two largest economies in Africa.
